Strategic Business Management skills

University Health Network (UHN) is Canada’s premier academic medical centre, representing a community of 30,000 Providers, Researchers, Employees, Volunteers, and Learners of all types, and driven by a singular Purpose: transforming lives and communities through excellence in care, discovery, and learning.

Knowing that the Discharge Summary is a critical step in a Patient’s journey, UHN launched a three-year Quality Improvement Plan - Discharge Summary Project to improve timeliness of completion and delivery, and quality of documentation.

The project’s success has enabled UHN to now be considered as a gold standard in Discharge Summary best practice, with far-reaching impacts on strengthening collaboration with Primary Care, improving care transitions, and ensuring safe and quality Patient care.

This session will highlight actionable strategies that have enabled UHN to deliver an on-time and under-budget project that drove sustainable quality improvement for 4,500 clinicians across 51 Inpatient Units.

Participants will learn the importance of rigorous application of project management best practices, processes and tools; focused change management methodologies used to engage diverse stakeholder groups; and the utilization of organizational data to derive insights, improve operational efficiencies, and maintain project outcomes post-implementation.


Andre D’Penha, BASc, PMP    

Andre D’Penha is a project management professional with over fourteen years of experience in the Canadian healthcare, retail, and automotive industries.

Over the last eleven years, he has successfully implemented complex clinical and quality improvement projects at Canada’s University Health Network (UHN), and is currently UHN’s Data Science Program Manager, enabling UHN to become an insight-enabled and data-driven Learning Health Organization.

Andre has won numerous awards for his project management accomplishments, including the 2018 PMI Award for Project Excellence – North America, the 2015 PMI Award for Project Excellence – North America, the 2017 Business Transformation & Operational Excellence Award for Best Achievement of Operational Excellence in Healthcare, and the 2017 3M Health Care Quality Team Award.

Michael Caesar, M.B.A., PfMP, PMP, LSSBB     

Michael brings twenty years of experience leading change across multiple organizations - including primary care, acute care, rehab, emergency and community care. He has served in several healthcare leadership roles focused on strategic partnerships, complex organizational change, business transformation, clinical process improvement, and enterprise and regional program management.

He also founded one of Ontario’s first hospital-based teams focused on Lean healthcare process improvement – delivering services at both the hospital and provincial levels.

Michael earned his MBA from the University of Victoria, holds PMP and PfMP certifications, and has been awarded several international awards for quality improvement and change management.
